Who doesn't love sharing poems with their students? I find the rhyming and fun words engage and excite nearly all of them even if it is for a short moment. My teaching partner over at
Mrs. Raj's Busy Bees teaches reading to all of my students (reminder: I teach just math). The other day she told me story about how she has kindergarten read/retell Five Little Pumpkins everyday during the month of October. I'm always looking for ways to join our two classes together I figured what better way than to link the counting poem to decomposing numbers, number bonds, counting backward, etc. So here's what I came up with:
