Updates! Number Forms / Number Words 1-10: Cut and Paste

Hello!
So I've learned A LOT since I started making items for my classroom and have finally gotten around to updating a few that had some quirks to work out and others that I just thought could be prettier :)  What can I say, I like things to look nice!

I had a few comments on the Number Forms with Base Ten item that said it confused students when I was using a font instead of the typical picture for the base ten picture part.  I remedied this and switched them out for graphics.  I also added a some matching number cards to the 1-10 set.  Hope you enjoy these!

30 Days of Classroom Christmas Crafts and Gifts...Day 17: Crystal Snowflakes

Day 17: Crystal Snowflakes

I can't wait to try these!!  They look so cool!

Materials:
    • 1 wide mouth jar
    • 3 white pipe cleaners per snowflake
    • boiling water
    • borax (look in the laundry aisle for 20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster)
    • pencil or pen
    • String
    • Food coloring (optional)
      Directions:
        1. To create a snowflake shape, twist the 3 pipe cleaners together in the center to make a 6-sided figure (picture an X with a line through the middle). Trim as needed so that the snowflake will fit easily into the mouth of the jar.
        2. Fill the jar 3/4 full with boiling water. Add 3 tablespoons of Borax for every cup of water that is used. Stir until completely dissolved. It is ok if some of the Borax settles in the bottom of the jar.
        3. You can now add food coloring to the water to create colorful snowflakes if you like.
        4. Tie the string to one of the ends of the snowflake and the other end of the string to the pencil. Dip the snowflake into the water making sure that the string is long enough to completely cover it with water.
        5. Rest the pencil across the top of the jar. Check to see that the snowflake floats freely not touching the sides or bottom of the jar.
        6. Let the jar rest, undisturbed overnight (at least 8 hrs). The result is a snowflake covered in shiny crystals!
          Tip:
          • Important: Adult supervision is needed when using boiling water and Borax. Please keep the Borax out of children's reach.

          Day 16:  Melted Snowman Ornament

I made a little snowman, as perfect as can be
I thought I'd keep him in my room and keep
          him warm like me.
But when I woke next morning my mind was in a muddle.
He's run away, I don't know why and left me with a puddle.

          Materials:
          • clear ornaments
          • salt or sugar
          • black beads
          • orange toothpick cut in half
          Directions:
          1. Take lid/hanger off ornament
          2. Pour in some sugar or salt.
          3. Add beads and toothpick.
          4. Put the lid back on.
          Tip:
          • Be careful not to tip the ornament upside down too often because of the lid/hangers have holes.

          • foil
          • hot glue
          • beads
          • orange puff

          Tip:
          • This would be best done in small groups to avoid burns.
          • Make sure you test how long your glue stays hot so you know about how long to have kids wait before decorating.

          • plastic cup
          • circle of cardstock
          • cotton balls or cotton stuffing

          1. Glue and assemble your scene for the inside of your ornament on your cardstock circle.  Be careful to keep it within the area of the inside of your cup.
          2. Apply a small edge of glue on your cup/paper circle.
          3. Attach a ribbon for a hanger to the top of your ornament.  TaDa!
          Tip:

          Day 11: Snow Globes

          Materials:
          • baby food jars
          • paint (if you want to paint the lids)
          • water
          • glitter or other plastic shavings for snow
          • corn syrup or glycerin (to make so fall slowly)
          • hot glue
          • figurines
          Directions:
          1. Prep jars by cleaning and painting lids.
          2. Assemble figurines on the lids and glue in place with hot glue or super glue.
          3. Dump about a teaspoon of glitter or plastic shavings into the jar.
          4. Fill halfway up with water.
          5. Add a few drops of corn syrup or glycerin (to make snow float more than sink)
          6. Fill the jar with more water, but leave space to avoid overflow.
          7. Apply a small line of glue along the inside of the lid and quickly close and tighten.
          8. Turn upside down and enjoy!
          Tips:
          • Have kids bring in small toys from home or find cheap little items from Oriental Trading Company, Walmart, or Dollar Tree.  Chances are kids will be able to bring in enough items though.  Hey, if you're like me you've been collecting these "toys" from kids all year!
          • Plastic items work best.  Remember they're going to be submerged in water forever!

          Day 10: Sun Catcher Ornaments

          Materials:
          • ornament drawing or outline
          • colored tissue paper
          • markers
          • clear tape
          • wax paper
          • iron
          • laminator (if desired)
          • ribbon
          Directions:
          1. Cut out center of the ornament.  I would do this for students and if you have a circle cutter (from scrapbooking) it would be very helpful to get good even cuts.  Have a Silhouette or Cricut?  Even better!
          2. Cut circles slightly bigger than the inside of the ornament out of wax paper.
          3. Put bits of tissue paper between 2 pieces of wax paper (waxy sides together if they feel different)
          4. Place a towel or cloth over the wax paper and iron the pieces together.  Keep the iron moving and check to see that the 2 wax paper pieces have adhered together after about 30 seconds.
          5. Decorate the paper parts of the ornament.
          6. Carefully tape the wax paper circle to the inside of the ornament.
          7. If desired, you can laminate the entire ornament for durability.
          8. Attach a ribbon for a hanger.

          Day 9: Snowmen Pencil Toppers

          Materials:
          • styrofoam balls
          • pencils (Dollar Tree has good cheap Christmas pencils)
          • beads for eyes and nose
          • string for mouth
          • ribbon
          • glue
          Directions:
          1. Push styrofoam ball onto pencil carefully (so you don't push through).  You may take off and secure with glue is desired, but not necessary.
          2. Glue beads in place for eyes and nose.
          3. Glue small string for smile.
          4. Finish off with a ribbon bow tie!
          Tips:
          • Assemble the foam ball and pencil for younger students so they don't break the ball.
          • You could also cut bits of painted orange toothpicks for noses.
          • Orange pipe cleaner bits could also work for noses.
          • Puffy paint or marker may be easier than string for smile.
          • Be prepared to tie many bows for younger students :)

          4. Decorate reindeer with googly eyes and red puffy nose.
          5. Add details with black marker if desired.
          Tips:

          Day 4:  Christmas Tree Pots

Picture from Not So Crafty Mom

I made these a few years ago on a smaller scale, but unfornately didn't take pictures!  I only used 2-3 sizes of pots starting with the smallest available size.  I also didn't put a base on my tree like this picture did.  My smaller tree turned out GREAT and was relatively inexpensive for the class (about $1 each).

          Materials:
          • terracotta pots in various sizes
          • green acrylic paint
          • pom poms (various colors, but enough yellow for everyone to have a "star")
          • liquid glue or hot glue
          Directions:
          1.  Paint pots green and allow to dry before assembly.
          2. Put a line of glue (liquid or hot glue) along the top of each pot that will be nested inside a smaller pot.
          3. The bottom pot used as a stand is optional.  I've never made them with stands mostly because I'm trying to cut costs for a whole class.  If you choose to put on a stand you can either paint it brown or leave it the terracotta color.
          4. Glue pom poms on as ornaments (see the TIPS for more ideas on ornaments)
          5. Glue on your "star" and YOU'RE DONE!
          TIPS:
          • Other fun items for ornaments could be buttons, small foam shapes, beads, glitter, puffy paint, etc.
          • Be prepared for many layers of paint.  The terracotta is very absorbent!

            • You can use sticker paper or vinyl if you'd like (great way to use up scraps if you have some on hand!)

            Directions:

            Day 1:  Glitter Ornaments

30 Days of Classroom Christmas Crafts and Gifts...Day 1: Glitter Ornaments

I've always loved those 30 days of... posts that people start on their blogs and I was thinking about what kind of crafts to do with my students this year and thought, "WOW there are so many wouldn't it be fun to compile them into a post or series?!"

            So here we go!!

30 Days of Classroom Christmas Crafts/Gifts for Kids!

            Day 1:  Glitter Ornaments

I made these AMAZING ornaments last year with my 2nd grade class and they had a blast!  Of course we did them in small groups while everyone else was watching a holiday movie and eating treats.  You can get a full tutorial at Plum Adorable.

            Basically, you'll need:
            • clear ornaments
            • glitter (fine works best)
            • and Pledge floor wax (it comes in a blue bottle and little goes a LONG way)
            1. Take the top of the ornament off.
            2. Squirt a bit of Pledge into an ornament and swish it around until the entire inside is coated.
            3. Sprinkle glitter into the ornament, cover the hole, and *shake, shake, shake*.
            4. Add more glitter as need until the entire inside is covered.
            5. Dump out extra lose glitter.
            6. Put the top back on and VOILA!!
            TIPS:
            • Dixie cups work great for pouring in glitter and dumping out extra Pledge.  By squishing the sides they make a nice spout.
            • Try to avoid getting bubbles in the Pledge by shaking too hard while coating with the liquid.
            •  Wipe down the outside of the ornament with something alcohol based to remove sticky residue.
            Happy Crafting!!
